I’ve heard about somehow getting a silver fishing rod, like going through a contest, but what about gold? Do you have to do the same thing?

You get a gold one if you talk to the mayor Tortimer after catching all the fish in the book.

Tom Nook will have a silver fishing rod for sale. To get the golden rod, you have to catch each of the 46 different fish or if you have a friend with one that will let you have it. You can also clone or copy one if you have someone you can work with that knows how to do it. I also found listings on ebay for golden tools (with other items as well). Hope this helps……
