Fly fishing equiptment question about leader and tippet?

I am new to fly fishing. Do i have to tie a tippet onto the leader from the start? Or can I just start out with only a leader and then when the leader wears down, put on a tippet?
Also, what flies do you reccomend this time of year for trout fishing?

A leader is a lot thicker than the tippet, this is so that the angler is not as limited to the size of tippet he/she wants to use. Tippet is what you tie to the leader which goes on the fly. Tapered leaders are thick and decrease in diameter has you go down the line, eliminating the need for tippet.
I hope that made sense, also for flies, it depends on where you are, you have to match the hatch, when you get there, look under leafs and trees. In my area, its mostly tan caddis and midges.

Find your state on the side, and keep giving details and it should show you what to use around the stream your fishing.
