at any speed the steering wheel allways wants to go to the right just like a car does when out of alignment……is this common in a boat???

tilt the motor full up, and take a look at the lower unit.

Just above and aft of the prop, attached to the antiventilation plate, is the “torque tab”. The clockwise rotation of the prop will try to walk the tail end of the motor to starboard, which turns the motor to port, resulting in a starboard turn. The torque tab is like a little rudder for the motor, to compensate for prop torque.

Loosen the retaining bolt, rotate the tab clockwise a tiny bit, and retighten. Tuning it in just right is a matter of trial and error. You might want to score a line across the edge before you adjust it, in case you want to reset it back to where it was.

The engine trim tab is out of adjustment. and or the engine is mounted slightly off center. The trim tab makes a lot of difference the faster you go, and then as the other answerer stated it is because of rotational torque of the prop. On Bass boats, there are a lot of high horse power engines , often with exotic props that make this more of a problem. Then jack plates and incorrect use of power trim causes excessive steering pull.

yes they do this incase you fall out of the boat so it wont keep going foward. one thing you can do to change this is to look at the prop, there should be a thin little plate right above the prop….take it off or straighten it if its not straight

At speed, proper trim of the motor will neutralize the “pull”.

Once you are up on plane, trim the motor until you feel the steering “loosen”…you should be able to find a sweet spot where you’ll just need a light touch to keep the boat tracking.
